There’s nothing quite like the joy of receiving a beautiful, fresh bouquet. The vibrant colors, the delicate fragrance, the instant lift they bring to any room—it’s pure magic. But in Nairobi’s unique climate, that magic can fade too quickly if your flowers aren’t cared for properly.
As a Nairobi florist passionate about delivering lasting beauty, I’m sharing our insider secrets. With these simple pro tips, you can extend the life of your fresh flowers from a few days to over a week, or even longer!
Start Right: The First 30 Minutes Are Crucial
1. Clean Vase, Happy Flowers
Before anything else, thoroughly clean your vase with soap and warm water. Residue from previous arrangements breeds bacteria that will quickly clog the stems and shorten your flowers’ lifespan.
2. The Angled Stem Cut (This is a Game-Changer!)
Using sharp scissors or a knife, trim 1-2 inches off each stem at a 45-degree angle. Why?
- Increased Surface Area: The angled cut creates a larger opening for water uptake.
- Prevents Stem Sit: A flat-cut stem can sit flush with the vase bottom, blocking water absorption.
Pro Tip: Cut stems underwater when possible to prevent air bubbles from entering the stem vessels.
3. Strip Those Leaves
Remove any leaves that will fall below the waterline. Submerged leaves decay rapidly, creating bacteria that cloud the water and rot the stems.
The Perfect Environment: Water, Food & Placement
4. Water Wisdom: Quality & Quantity
- Use Lukewarm Water: Most flowers absorb lukewarm water more efficiently than cold.
- Fill Appropriately: Fill the vase about halfway. Too much water encourages rot, while too little limits hydration.
5. Flower Food is Not a Gimmick!
That little packet we include with every Fleur by Jess order is your secret weapon. It contains three essential components:
- Food (Sugar): Nourishes the blooms.
- Bactericide: Keeps the water clean.
- Acidifier: Helps stems draw water more effectively.
No Flower Food? Make Your Own: Mix 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of household bleach (to kill bacteria), and 2 teaspoons of lemon or lime juice in 1 liter of water.
6. Location, Location, Location!
Where you place your vase matters immensely. Keep your arrangement away from:
- Direct Sunlight & Heat Sources: Windowsills, radiators, and top of TVs will cause flowers to wilt prematurely.
- Ripening Fruit: Fruit emits ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that accelerates aging in flowers.
- Drafts & Air Vents: Constant blowing air dehydrates petals quickly.
Maintenance: The Key to Longevity
7. The Two-Day Rule
Change the water and add fresh flower food every two days. This is the single most effective way to prevent bacterial growth.
8. Recut the Stems
Every time you change the water, give the stems another small trim. This clears any blockages that may have formed and ensures they can keep drinking efficiently.
9. Remove Fading Blooms
As individual flowers begin to wilt, gently remove them from the arrangement. This prevents them from releasing ethylene gas and allows the remaining healthy blooms to thrive.
Special Care for Specific Blooms
- Roses: They are thirsty! Ensure they have plenty of water and mist the petals lightly to prevent the outer petals (guard petals) from browning.
- Tulips: They continue to grow in the vase! Recut them frequently and expect them to move and bend toward the light—it’s part of their charm.
- Hydrangeas: These are famously thirsty. Don’t be afraid to mist the blooms directly, and consider submerging the entire head in cool water for 10 minutes if they look limp.
- Lilies: Carefully remove the pollen-filled anthers (the yellow tips) as the flower opens. This prevents staining and can help the bloom last longer.
Nairobi-Specific Tips
Our local climate presents unique challenges. Here’s how to combat them:
- Evening Cooling: Nairobi nights can be cool, which actually helps flowers. Move arrangements to a cooler spot overnight if possible.
- Dust Management: Keep flowers in less dusty areas and gently mist them to clean petals.
- Altitude Consideration: At Nairobi’s altitude, flowers may drink faster. Check water levels daily!
